The Astronomy Research Group Lead, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State, Prof Augustine Ubachukwu, has said that Nigeria and a few African countries will witness the primary total eclipse of the year on May 16.
Ubachukwu, in an interview on Wednesday with the press agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the second eclipse is predicted to occur on November 8.
He explained that each month, the new phase of the moon passes roughly between the world and therefore the sun then orbits to the opposite side of the world to become a full-of-the-moon .
“In an occasion of precise alignment of those three heavenly objects, either a solar or eclipse occurs. a complete eclipse occurs when a full-of-the-moon passes through earth’s shadow in space and is usually called the blood moon due to the characteristic red colour of the lunar surface during the event.”
“The moon’s orbit is tilted with reference to the sun’s apparent path through the sky and only very occasionally does a full-of-the-moon travel through the earth’s deep umbra shadow to cause a complete eclipse .
“This great event will occur within the early hours of May 16, 2022, and would be visible in total phase from most parts of Africa, including Nigeria,” he said.
According to him, a larger-than-usual full-of-the-moon will enter the centre of the earth’s shadow for overflow 80 minutes.
“In Nigeria, the eclipse is predicted to start out around 2.30 a.m, reaching maximum at 5.11a.m, then ends at around 6.30 a.m, a complete of about four hours of the eclipse.”
“During the moon’s long journey through the earth’s shadow, light which will reach the lunar surface will first be filtered through the earth’s atmosphere. Short-wavelength blue light from the sun are going to be scattered by molecules within the atmosphere, while longer-wavelength red light mostly travels throughout ,” the Don said.
He added that the dominant colour of sunshine seen on the moon for the duration are going to be red.
