More than 100 people died after a riot broke out at an Liga 1 football match between Arema and Persebaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, Indonesia
In the East Java Derby, Persebaya defeated Arema by a score of 3-2, which led a sizable contingent of fans to invade the field following the final siren.
Tear gas was fired by riot police in the stadium as supporters climbed over fences to escape the smoke in horrifying video that circulated on social media.

Security personnel reportedly kicked and hit spectators in an effort to control the swarming crowd, according to the Times of Indonesia.
Thousands of fans were having trouble breathing as a result of the tear gas, and several of them eventually fainted.
The chief of the health office for the Malang Regency, Wiyanto Wijoyo, disclosed the alarming number of hospitalizations for injuries and the horrifying number of fatalities.

According to Wiyanto, “more than 120 individuals died; they died from disorder, crowding, trampling, and asphyxia.”
Following the incident, PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) President Akhmad Hadian Lukita released a statement.
Lukita expressed his worry and regret for the event.
“We offer our sympathies, and we hope that everyone will learn something from this.”
The Indonesia FA said Arema would not host any more home games for the duration of the season, and the other Liga 1 games that were scheduled for the week have been postponed.
On behalf of the governing body, Mochamad Iriawan, president of the Indonesia FA (PSSI), also issued a statement.
Iriawan stated, “PSSI regrets the conduct of Aremania supporters at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.
